[2] The “etendue” is a fundamental property in optics that measures how spread out light is in both area and angle. It follows the conservation of energy law, i.e. the etendue cannot be decreased or increased; it is a conserved quantity.

Working Principle

A laser launches an optical signal into a nano-active optical fiber. The optical signal will interact with two different types of structures integrated inside the multi-material, engineered optical fiber, i.e. nano-antennas and active pigments (forming the so-called nano-active structures).

The nano-antennas are glass nano-structures integrated inside the engineered optical fiber and their role is to give a specific directionality to the optical field from the side of the optical fiber. The 3-dimensional shape, strength and location of these nano-antennas offer the possibility to design a specific side lighting angle from few degrees up to few tens of degrees at any location along the engineered optical fiber.

LuxiBright - working principle

The active pigments are formulated and inserted inside the hybrid material of the engineered optical fiber to up- or down-convert the primary light of the laser and deliver the final colorful light. As the technology involves low thermal quenching a full variety of optical pigments can be advantageously used to design almost any colors with high conversion efficiency at any location along the engineered optical fiber.
